Attempt #1 to create a cocktail to match Death by Misadventure.

This drink was intended to be very botanical (apothecarial tonics play a role in the book), chaotic, messy, interesting (like my book, wink wink), colourful, and a little strange (the glacé cherries suspended in ice cubes are meant to allude to something).

While this concoction is deliciously light - perfect for a summers’ day - it is entirely too pretty and not appropriate for a book involving death. I suspect it would go well with a Bridgerton novel.

Which is to say, I shall have to try again. More drink sampling, how dreadful.

The Coroner Will See You Now

Recipe

60ml Scapegrace gin/Lunatic & Lover Botanical rum

30ml Lime Juice

15ml Basil simple syrup

Top with ginger beer

Red Cinnamon sugar rim

Decorate glass with mint leaves, lime slices and ice cubes with edible (emphasis on edible! flowers) and glacé cherries.

Bartending tip: coat rim of glass in beaten egg white before pressing into sugar for even coverage.

January-March 2026: Top of Reading Pile

The Mischief Makers - I love Rebecca. It was very interesting learning about Daphne du Maurier’s life, particularly the estate of Menabilly which so captured her imagination.

Mad Mabel - a witty page turner. Elsie Mabel is an absolute character. For me, it serves as a commentary on the damaging nature of gossip and the irreparable damage it can do to a person’s reputation, regardless of whether or not it’s true.

The Impossible Fortune - another great addition to the series. An accessible, funny read. I am greatly afraid though as to when Osman will reach the point where the core four characters will start dropping in numbers!

The Fallen Woman -the relationship between the mother and her two daughters reminded me of Bryce Courtenay’s Jessica. Very enjoyable read, comforting in that the reader knows exactly what the ending will be.

Sorcery and Small Magics - this had me looking up the author to see when the next instalment of the series is out!! A laugh-out-loud, page turner - finished in a day!

The Diamond Eye - the first Kate Quinn historical fiction I’ve read, and it won’t be the last. I love reading about strong, real-life women! Mila Pavilchenko’s life was extraordinary, and I’m so glad she was given a voice.
